Read each question carefully – you may not have to answer all sections of each question. Where you are only required to answer some of the sections of a question, you must indicate clearly which of those sections you wish to have graded. Abbreviations and Data: Question 1 (22 points) . (a) Provide a definitions for the following terms with regard to nucleophilic substitution reactions: a. Attacking nucleophile b. Leaving group (b) Give an example of a poor leaving group with regards to nucleophilic substitution reactions. (c) Give an example of a reaction that converts a poor leaving group to a good leaving group. Identify the poor and good leaving groups. (d) Write the mechanism for an S N 2 reaction, including tranisition states and reactive intermediates (if any).
