Human Performance 29 15:54 Hyperbaric Physiology: In salt water 10 meters (33’) = +1ATM When one goes underwater without breathing apparatus: the critical factor  is breath hold and amount of oxygen available.  Long volume gets squeezed  but its not a limiting factor. People have been able to go down 500ft so ave.  pressure is 15ATM.  Boyles Law If you go to 66’… 66/33=2ATM, but one most add 1ATM for sea level. So this  would be 3ATM.  If one person has 4L: and suffers fear and ascends fast:  then 4L becomes 12L due to pressure reduced when going back up AIR  EMBOLA.   When people go under water, pain in inner ear is because of (ear is at sea level  pressure) the air from outside pushes in if there is no equilibration and can cause  rupture of the ear. Sometimes the passage can be blocked (if they have mucus)  blocking that tube it can be a disaster. Don’t ever dive if you have allergies or  respiratory problem. If you cant equilibrate water will go inside the ear. When an airplane and it descends there is pain in ear because of the  pressure
