Product Mix Product mix (assortment) is the set of all products and items that a particular seller offers for sale. Width of a product mix means how many different product lines the company carries example: Detergent, toothpaste, milk, entertainment Length of Product mix means the total number of product in mix Depth of product mix means how many variants are offered of each product in line Example: Toothpaste (decay, fresh, etc Consistency of product mix refers to how closely related the various product lines are in end use, production requirement, distribution channel Product line Decisions Each product line has its own manager. Shampoo, oil, tea, soap etc Product line Analysis Build, maintain, harvest, and divest decision after analysis Sales and profit These two factors are crucial. ..if hurt by competitors High concentration of sales in few might be risky Market profile How you positioned your products against competitors From point of product line analysis, the product manager may be able to decide on product line length, line modernization, pruning etc Product-line length The profits can be increased by adding to the line if the product line is too short, or increased by reducing some product from the line if it is too long. Company objectives influence product-line length High market share and growth will require longer lines (Students tell the cost) Company lengthens its product line in two ways: Line stretching line filling
