INTEGRATING SOCIAL STUDIES AND THE ARTS 2 How does your learning activity and instructional strategy foster the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills in social studies and the arts Social studies and English Language Arts can be integrated into one lesson. Each social lesson will require reading from print. Students will use English Language Arts to write and draw something about the Social Studies topic being studied. According to research, critical thinking is major goal that teachers strive to implement in social studies and English Language Arts (Patrick, 1986). Teachers should plan lessons and activities that allow space for critical thinking and problem solving among students. Students are familiar with remembering facts, speaking, and writing facts. Teacher should model critical thinking and problem solving for students. The ongoing use of the two will reflect during small and large group discussions. The educator should prompt the students with higher order thinking questions that lead to student discussions. The use of K-W-L charts helps the teacher identify student prior knowledge. This prior knowledge helps students connect with new content that will
