Feminism Women in the past have fought for their equality, which has made a big impact to women of today: the right to vote, the opportunity to work, the chance to receive education, and to have a voice. Women were treated like a man’s property and were treated without respect. Throughout history and literature, women had stories of their suffering. Korean wives were used to help continue a man’s name. If the wife did not give birth to a son after continuous tries, the husband would leave the wife for another woman because daughters did not carry on the man’s family name. The Chinese author Amy Tan tells a story of her mother’s friend who was sold to a rich man so that her family could have money for food. Black women were abused and raped by their white “masters.” They did not have the choice to work for their “masters” but were bought and sold as the men pleased. Women had little or no respect from men as they were used mostly as property or for leisure; men were able to have more than one wife and have concubines. Times have changed but some women still do not have the rights that men have. The most recent example of women not having rights and not being equal to men is the limited freedom that the women of Afghanistan had. They have to follow rules that were made for just for women. One rule is that unmarried women are not able to leave the home of their father. When they are married, the women are not able to leave the home of their husband. The women seem like they are under house arrest because they are not able to enter and leave their home as they please. Shiite women of Afghanistan have to fulfill the sexual desires of their
