What person is generally recognized as “launching the first psychological laboratory?” Wilhelm Wundt 2. With what perspective was John B. Watson associated? What criticism did people associated with this perspective make of the method of introspection? Behavioral. They think that we cannot observe people’s sensations, feelings, and thoughts, but we can observe people’s behaviors as they response to different situations. 3. What is a definition of psychology? (two were presented in lecture, one is in the text, any one will do) The science of behavior and mental process. The scientific study of behavior and the factors that influences it. 4. What is the “biggest and most persistent issue” that has consistently reappeared in the history of psychology? The relative contributions of biology and experiences. 5. What three types of influences make up the biopsychosocial approach of psychology? The three types of influences make up the biopsychosocial are influences of biological, psychological, and social-cultural. 6. List and briefly describe the 8 major perspectives in psychology (an eighth perspective was added in lecture). Neuroscience -How the body and brain enable emotions, memories and sensory experiences. Evolutionary –How the natural selection of traits promotes the perpetuation of one’s genes. Behavior Genetics –How our genes and our environment influence our individual differences. Psychodynamics –How behavior springs from unconscious drive and conflicts. Behavioral –How we learn observable responses. Cognitive –how we encode, process, store, and retrieve information. Social-Cultural –How behavior and thinking vary across situations and cultures. Humanistic –Emphasizes the importance of choice and meaning. 7. What are the four basic goals of psychology (covered in lecture)? To observe, to understand, to predict, and to control or influence. 8. What is the difference between basic and applied research? Name and describe two potential problems associated with using only hindsight to explain why events have occurred? Hindsight understanding means looking backwards to what has already happened. We need to be concerned about it because Hindsight Bias and the overconfidence always lead us to overestimate. But they may also help us sift the reality from illusion.
