Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo “Johnny Got His Gun” is a novel written by Dalton Trumbo in 1938. Trumbo was an American novelist and screenwriter who was later blacklisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations for his criticism of America’s participation during World War 1. “Johnny Got His Gun” is an antiwar kind of novel. In the novel, the main character, Joe Bonham, is a soldier who was serving during World War 1. Joe regains consciousness and finds himself in a hospital bed where he had been admitted after being injured by a blast caused by the explosion of an artillery shell. Joe then realizes the amount of damage that the explosion had done to him. He had lost both of his arms and legs and his face was severely damaged since his eyes, teeth, ears and tongue were not there. Only his mind is left functioning properly. Joe then realizes that he is trapped in his own body. Joe then contemplates suicide by suffocation, but his attempt fails since he could not remove or control a tracheotomy that he had.
