In-Class Assignment for Ch. 8/9 Just as cultures vary greatly across the globe, the influence they have on both the physical and cognitive development of children varies greatly as well. Perhaps the most significant influence culture has on the physical development of children lies in the differences that occur in medical care and nutrition. Differences in cognitive development among different cultures can be influenced by a number of factors such as emphasis on education, views on make-believe play, and parental warmth. In countries where sufficient high-quality food is lacking, such as developing countries, children tend to lack essential vitamins and mineral and, therefore, their physical development is negatively affected. Children with such deficiencies tend to be small for their age, lack attention, and develop behavioral problems later in life. Furthermore, cultural differences physical development in early childhood can be associated with variations in health care.
