Chapter 14/15 Assignment It is obvious from simply viewing advertisements on television and in magazines that women are being provided with influential, negative images and that such images may have a negative impact on their self-esteem. However, after viewing the research provided on the About-Face website, it is obvious that the media that girls are being exposed to has the potential to cause such things as low self-esteem, depression, and eating disorders. Seeing as, on average, girls are exposed to approximately 6 hours of media a day (in the forms of television, internet, and print) they view a great deal of these negative images. According to the research provided on the About-Face website, this exposure has been shown to increase body dissatisfaction, depression levels, and lowered their self- esteem. In addition to this, there is a positive correlation between increased magazine reading and extreme weight loss behaviors.
