Chapter 10 Assignment In my endeavor to evaluate gender stereotyping in children’s cartoons and books, I came across several surprising discoveries of how males and females are portrayed. The sources I chose to analyze came from different time periods and mediums. Among these choices was a Berenstain Bears book entitled Bear Scouts , the children’s television show “Spongebob Squarepants,” and the comic strip “Calvin & Hobbes.” The gender stereotyping in the book Bear Scouts was quite prevalent and obvious. In this Berenstain Bears book, the males and females are portrayed in more “traditional” gender roles. For example, in this story, the father takes his son and a group of scouts on a camping trip while the mother and daughter stay home doing housework. Furthermore, the father in this tale seems to be more reckless while the mother holds a more levelheaded and nurturing position in the family. It also appeared that the male characters in Bear Scouts were involved in the more exciting aspects of the plot:
