Chelsea Valentine March 19, 2010 EXAM 3 ESSAY Describe the development of play types during the preschool years. During the preschool years the way in which children play is changing and developing. These transitions are manifested in many ways and have a variety of benefits to the overall development of the child. Furthermore, through the development of play, cognitive advances are also being made. Although there is a great deal of changes occurring during the preschool years, the development of make-believe play allows children to practice and strengthen their newly acquire representational schemes. The most important of these changes reflect the preschooler’s growing symbolic mastery and appear in three different ways. One of these changes is that play detaches from the real-life conditions associated with it. When children first begin to play in toddlerhood, they will only use realistic objects (i.e. a toy telephone to talk into) and their pretending is not yet flexible. By the age of 2,
