King Louis XIV refers to the king of Tonkin as his “very dear and good friend” because he is attempting to flatter the king and, therefore, would be able to send Christian missionaries to Tonkin. In addition, I do not feel that King Louis XIV would start a conversation with a French shopkeeper in the same fashion. I feel that King Louis XIV would identify more with a fellow king rather than a fellow Frenchman because, from looking at the portrait that corresponds to the letter, one can deduce that King Louis XIV was somewhat pompous and would not lower his social standing to that of a common Frenchman. 2. I do not believe that the king of France, King Louis XIV, had to persuade people to do things very often but, rather, tended to order tasks to be completed as he was a very powerful leader. When the king was required to persuade people to do what he wanted, these individuals were most likely other royalty or persons of high social standing. 3.
