HW1 1. Describe the common points between virtual circuit switching and circuit switching, and the common points between virtual circuit switching and datagram switching. A: Virtual circuit switching & circuit switching: both require connection setup operation before data transmission takes place, and release operation after each session. Both can provide bandwidth guarantee. Virtual circuit switching & datagram switching: both are based on packet switching, packets are stored and forwarded in each intermediate node before reaching the destination. Statistical multiplexing is employed in both of them. 2. List the major advantages and disadvantages with the layered approach to protocols. A: Advantages: Simplify system design by dividing the protocol into multiple modules, each as a layer. Facilitate upgrade since each layer is relatively independent. Improve interoperability due to standardized layer functionalities and interfaces. Disadvantages:
