Chapter 6 Outline PSYC 201: F18 1) States of Consciousness a) Waking Consciousness i) Consciousness- our awareness of ourselves and our environment. ii) Selective Attention (1) Selective attention- the focusing of conscious awareness on a particular stimulus. (2) Intentional blindness- failing to see visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere. iii) Levels of Information Processing b) Sleep and Dreams i) Biological Rhythms and Sleep (1) Circadian Rhythm (a) Circadian rhythm- the biological clock; regular bodily rhythms that occur on a 24-hour cycle. (2) Sleep Stages (a) REM sleep- rapid eye movement sleep, a recurring sleep stage during which vivid dreams commonly occur. Also known as paradoxical sleep, because muscles are relaxed (except for minor twitches) but other body systems are active. (b) Alpha waves- the relatively slow brain waves of a relaxed, awake state. (c) Sleep- periodic, natural, reversible loss of consciousness- as distinct from unconsciousness resulting from a coma, general anesthesia, or hibernation. (d) Hallucinations- false sensory experiences, such as seeing something in the absence of an external visual stimulus. (e) Delta waves- the large, slow brain waves associated with deep sleep. (3) REM Sleep ii) Why Do We Sleep?

(1) The Effects of Sleep Loss (2) Sleep Theories (a) A species sleep pattern tends to suit its ecological niche. iii) Sleep Disorders (1) Insomnia- recurring problems in falling or staying asleep. (2) Narcolepsy- a sleep disorder characterized by uncontrollable sleep attacks. The sufferer may lapse directly into RE< sleep, often at inopportune times.
