Sleep continued Sleep Debt is th difference between the amount of sleep attained and the amount needed to be alert. Most adults need about 8 hours of sleep each night A typical college student gets 6-7 hours Sleeping in on the weekends does not fully recapture sleep lost You can’t store sleep. Circadian Rhythms: daily 24-hour cycles of waking and sleeping, maintained primarily by the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN ) SCN, is internal “biological clock” controls body temperature and levels of sleep. Signals the pineal gland to release melatonin as we prepare to sleep and signals the pituitary to release growth hormone Melatonin increases relaxation and sleepiness. Growth hormone is signaled to the body to repair and renew its tissues. The Circadian Rhythms are readjusting every morning when you awake. The body has increasing difficulty adjusting to more that a one-hour difference in the start time of each clock cycle. Brain cycles into two main state of sleep
