Overweight and Obesity Overweight is body weight that exceeds the recommended guidelines for good health. Obesity is body weight that greatly exceeds the recommended guidelines. No gender, age, state, racial group, or educational level is spared form the problem of overweight although the problem is worse for the young and the poor. Both overweight and obesity are associated with serious health problems . 66% of American adults are overweight, 34% meet the definition of obese. Overweight or at-risk for overweight is increasing in young people 6-19. 16% are overweight and 32% are at-risk for overweight. An elementary school child who is overweight has an 80% liklihood of being overweight at age 12. A person who is obese at age 18 faces 28 to 1 odds against maintaining a healthy adult weight. In 1991: 4 states had an obesity rate of 15%: NONE had a rate of 20% In 2007: ONLY COLORADO had a rate below 20% The overweight and obese are 4 times more likely to die before reaching expected lifespan
