For security needs (always bribing Greeks) ii. Very wealthy empire d. Strategy (Goals) i. Move over to Asia, Secure Position 1. Crosses Hellespont 2. ~37-38,000 or perhaps considerably higher because of auxiliary members +40,000. Then gains more in Persia. ii. Proceeds to occupy coast of Asia Minor ( Mediterranean Strategy ) as opposed to going straight into the Persian heartland 1. Needs to keep communications open with Greece, Macedonia for supply needs 2. Denies the Persian navy from aiding the Persians iii. Final objective: Destroy Persian monarchy, Occupy Persia, and Create Pan-Hellenic Empire 1. Recognizes the ethic mix-up of the lands e. Army Notes i. Supply Issues 1. Heavily laden (despite emphasis on streamline + speed) 2. Tried to time movements so that they could run into rivers 3. 16 mile marches per day 4.
