Medication Fact Sheet Brand name Amoxil Generic name Drug class Antibiotic, penicillin Indications Amoxicillin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as ear infections, bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and E. coli or salmonella infection. Contraindications/ precautions Contradictions: hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, penicillin or any component of the formulation Precautions: In patients with renal impairment, doses and/or frequency of administration should be modified in response to the degree of renal impairment. A high percentage of patients with infectious mononucleosis have developed rash during therapy with amoxicillin. A low incidence of cross allergy with other beta-lactams and cephalosporin exist. Careful inquiry should be made concerning previous hypersensitivity reactions to penicillins, cephalosporins, or other allergens. If an allergic reaction occurs, amoxicillin should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted. Adverse effects
