Brand name Pravachol Generic name Pravastatin Drug class Statins (Used for lowering cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular disease ) Indications Consider pravastatin therapy in patients at increased risk for atherosclerosis-related clinical events as a function of cholesterol level, the presence or absence of coronary heart disease, and other risk factors. Primary prevention of coronary events: In hypercholesterolemic patients without clinically evident coronary heart disease (CHD), pravastatin is indicated to reduce the risk of the following: cardiovascular mortality with no increase in death from noncardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction (MI), and undergoing myocardial revascularization procedures. Secondary prevention of cardiovascular events: In patients with clinically evident CHD, pravastatin is indicated to slow the progression of coronary atherosclerosis and reduce the risk of the following: MI, stroke and stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA), total mortality by reducing coronary death, and undergoing myocardial revascularization procedures. Hyperlipidemia: An adjunct to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B (apo B), and
