Brand name Prevacid Generic name Lansoprazole Drug class Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) which block the production of acid by the stomach Indications Lansoprazole is used to treat ulcers; gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and injury of the food pipe (esophagus); and conditions where the stomach produces too much acid. Contraindications/ precautions Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulations. Amoxicillin is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any penicillin. Clarithromycin is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to clarithromycin, erythromycin, and any of the macrolide antibiotics. Lansoprazole passes through breast milk. Therefore, it is recommended that women stop nursing while taking lansoprazole.
