Operations Management The Transformation Process - know it Key measures of success - priority order: 1. Safety 2. Quality 3. Productivity Safety : occupational safety and health administration (OSHA) , poor safety is costly- for the person that’s injured and the company because of worker’s compensation and disability and medical bills – makes everything messy and costly Quality – total quality management (TQM) and quality management systems – defect free and meets customer’s needs – quality is everyone’s job from the top down Productivity – productivity = (outputs/inputs) , lean manufacturing (Toyota production system-used as benchmark)- becoming more profitable- more outputs with less cost – lean enterprise (beyond manufacturing) Lean philosophy- customer focus, employee involvement, continuous improvement More from Toyota- built-in quality, just-in=time production (don’t want to build inventory) , waste elimination (reduce cost , more productive) – used world wide
