Taylor McGill Comp II Professor Holman April 17, 2020 The Thoughts He Carried The story “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien tells the story of a group of soldiers in a foreign country who have to “carry” a variety of different things. The narrator starts the story by explaining the necessary things that each soldier must carry and then explains the things that each character brings along with them. However, by the end of the story, the narrator starts to talk about the psychological things a soldier has to carry in their mind. The leader of the group, First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross is a character that the reader gets to see into the emotions of. This man is in love with a woman named Martha. The text explains to the reader that Lt. Cross does not feel as if Martha loves him the same way he loves her, “...he wanted Martha to love him as he loved her…” His love for Martha was something he would focus on to take away some of the emotional weight of what he was doing.
