The Dove Self-Esteem ad, although a beauty company, does not use its products in the ad because this ad is, no matter how much irony involved, about a person’s inner beauty. Its use of black and white photography is to grab people’s attention on the seriousness of the message. The girl used in the ad reflects someone with an alternative lifestyle, someone who may still be on a journey of who she is. She is not thin, nor is she fat. This is most probably the type of person who would benefit from this type of ad according to their research. The My Rich Uncle ad’s use of colors grabs the readers’ attention in a different way. While both ads give hope, this ad is less about a person’s emotions or inner strength. It’s main message is to educate people where banks are using their money and to stress how education is of their least priority. They want the reader to know that there are other options and that My Rich Uncle could be just that. The rhetoric, while comical, could not be closer to the truth.
