Unformatted text preview: Culture and the Cold War 21:512:383.01 Instructor: Matthew Friedman Email: email@example.com Office: Conklin 337 Office hours: TBA Class Location: Conklin Hall 346 Class Time: Monday 2:30-3:50 pm and Wednesday 1:00-2:20 pm The period of American history from the end of the Second World War to the 1990s was a time of paradoxes. The United States emerged from the war as a superpower, with a thriving economy and flourishing popular and high culture. The country seemed, indeed, to have entered what Time magazine publisher Henry Luce called the American Century. However, this was also the time of the Cold War, a simmering geopolitical standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union, the other superpower, whose culture, political ideology and global ambitions seemed diametrically opposed to American interests and way of life. This course will examine how Americans understood and responded to real and imagined threats of political subversion at home, competition abroad and fears of nuclear war, and how American culture sought to both reassure and consolidate a canon of national values. We will discuss perceptions of a Soviet threat and the concepts of containment and dtente, the Red Scare, fear of The Bomb, and how they helped shape American culture for more than four decades. READINGS/SCREENINGS The required texts are: Stephen J. Whitfield, The Culture of the Cold War, Second Edition. Arthur Schlesinger, The Vital Center: The Politics of Freedom Pat Frank, Alas Babylon Other readings are in a course pack available at Porta Print Publishing at 33 Halsey Street in Newark. Students are also required to screen a numbers of films: Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Rio Grande, Them! Doctor Strangelove and Red Dawn. These films will be available on reserve at the Dana Library media center. ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to attend every class, arrive on time and stay for the duration of the class. They will not be penalized for one unexcused absence. Students will be penalized one grade (out of a possible 10) per unexcused absence. Students may be excused for illness, family emergency and similar extreme situations with documentation, like a doctors note.
