Here it is folks! The NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) pact was finally signed today, April 4, 1949 right here in Washington D.C. This pact is the result of President Harry Truman's call for a defensive alliance of nations in the North Atlantic. But the pact is more than just that. It is a mutual military defense “entente.” In other words, it is a “shield against aggression,” in the words of Truman. Specifically, he was referring to Soviet aggression. As you may recall, the Soviets recently blocked all ground travel to the American occupation zone in west Berlin during the Berlin Blockade. This only heightened the Western world's fears of Soviet aggression. Consequently, this military alliance was formed, due in part to Truman's warning that the forces of democracy and communism were locked in a dangerous struggle. The represented countries who joined in signing the NATO agreement are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Portugal.
