Here it is folks! The NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) pact was finally signed today, April 4, 1949 right here in Washington D.C. This pact is the result of President Harry Truman's call for a defensive alliance of nations in the North Atlantic. But the pact is more than just that. It is a mutual military defense “entente.” In other words, it is a “shield against aggression,” in the words of Truman. Specifically, he was referring to Soviet aggression. As you may recall, the Soviets recently blocked all ground travel to the American occupation zone in west Berlin during the Berlin Blockade. This only heightened the Western world's fears of Soviet aggression. Consequently, this military alliance was formed, due in part to Truman's warning that the forces of democracy and communism were locked in a dangerous struggle. The represented countries who joined in signing the NATO agreement are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Portugal.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
