Indian and Chinese societies were the gift of their religious beliefs (a play on Herodotus’ words, “Egypt was the gift of the Nile”). A. From South Asia to East Asia, it is obvious to see that without the distinctive religions of these two countries, the evolution of these peoples would’ve never taken the same course. B. India’s social and political assets contributing to this rely on Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. C. China’s social and political assets contributing to this rely on Confucian and Taoist beliefs. II. Religious beliefs of India and how they shape its SOCIAL structure A. Hinduism’s caste system 1. Aryans (invaders of India) created strict segregation 2. System of ranks/classes stratified people’s status level a. Not surprisingly, scholars and priests were at top of caste system. B. Buddhism’s high regard for spiritual education 1. Education of priests was held on a high degree for followers of the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, or Buddha
