Esteban Peralta 12-17-08 WHH 6 Medieval Unit Textbook Questions Medieval Unit Textbook Questions 13:1 1. ● A new society slowly emerged during the Middle Ages , or medieval period, after the gradual decline of the Roman Empire. ● In the Roman province of Gaul, a Germanic people called the Franks held power. ● The Church built religious communities called monasteries , where monks devoted their lives to serving God. ● Under Gregory I, the papacy became a secular , or worldly, power involved in politics. ● The Carolingian Dynasty was the family that would rule the Franks from 751 to 987. ● “Charlemagne was the most potent prince with the greatest skill and success in different countries during the forty-seven years of his reign,” according to Einhard, a monk and his admiring secretary. 3. 3 roots of medieval culture in western Europe: the classical heritage of Rome, the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church, the customs of various Germanic tribes 4. 3 ways that civilization in western Europe declined after the Roman Empire fell: 1)The breakdown of trade due to constant invasions destroyed Europe’s cities as economic centers. 2)With the fall of the Roman Empire, cities were abandoned as centers of administration. 3)The level of learning sank sharply as more and more families left for rural areas. 6. The partnership between 2 powerful forces, a Frankish king and the pope, was beneficial to both due to the following. Politics played a key role in spreading Christianity. In addition, the Church would become a power involved in politics thanks to the relationship. For example, the Church would use revenues to raise armies, repair roads, and help the poor, all of which are beneficial to the king.

7. Charles Martel’s victory at the Battle of Tours was so important for Christianity because if the Muslims had won, western Europe might have become part of the Muslim Empire. His victory made him a Christian hero. 8. I believe that Charlemagne’s greatest achievement was conquering new lands to both the south and the east of his kingdom. Why do I make such a statement? The reason behind my conclusion is that through these conquests, Charlemagne spread Christianity. Furthermore, he reunited western Europe for the first time since the Roman Empire, a very significant accomplishment, if you ask me.
