BI SCI 003 Lecture 1 Notes Environment – the total of all biotic (living) and abiotic (nonliving) factors that surround and potentially influence an organism Environmental Science – the study of how the natural world works, how our environment affects us, and how we affect our environment Population – the number of plants or animals of the sames species Linear vs Exponential Growth Resources – various substances and energy sources we need to survive Nonrenewable -exist in limited supply or are still being formed -use exceeds replacement Renewable -being formed faster than they are being used -formation exceeds used Potentially Renewable – can be renewed fairly rapidly through natural processes Sustainable Yield – the highest rate at which a potentially renewable resource can be used indefinitely without reducing its available supply Pollution – an undesirable change in the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of the environment Toxicity – how poisonous something is Degradability – how long it remains in environment before it breaks down Concentration – how much is actually present (mass/volume) ppm parts per million

BI SCI 003 Lecture 2 Notes Exponential growth – growth at a constant rate of increase per unit of time (J Curve) Arithmetic growth – growth that increases data at a constant amount per unit of time (S) Biotic Potential – maximum reproductive rate of an organism (what population could be) Lmiting Factor –a n abiotic factor than can limit or prevent growth of a population even if everything helse is held optimimun (temperature disease) Environmental resistance – all of the limiting factors jointly acting to limit the growth of a population Carrying capacity – max population of a species that a given habitat can support oover a given period of time -size of area -net primary productivity – what’s left after primary producers use energy to support themselves; available as food to other organisms Additions to population : births, immigration Subtractions from population : deaths and emigration When balanced – zero population growth
