There are plenty of leadership models and theories on how to successfully lead people. Some believe that leaders are born with those abilities, some believe they are honed over time. Choosing the appropriate model of leadership that suits both you, and the leadership opportunity you are in at the time, is of great importance. It helps you as a leader to navigate the situation, and draw from your knowledge and skills to handle things effectively, and accomplish goals.Leadership is about people, and management is about processes. Leadership is setting theexample, inspiring those you lead to work harder, and help them to be better for having been led by you. Leaders are supportive, fair, trusting, kind, motivating, and above all, are concerned with others, before themselves. Leadership is about bringing everyone together to fulfill the goals within the organization, while promoting the personal growth of those you lead. Leadershipisn’t about credit, it is about doing the right thing.Leadership opportunities are all around us. The key is to find the correct model of leadership to use that is most effective for the situation. There are many different leadership models however, I am most comfortable with situational leadership. The highlighting factor of situational leadership is that no one leadership style is better than another, and therefore depends on where it is to be applied, and with whom. This type of leadership gives direction on the manner in which to support your employees and to bring out the best in them for themselves, andfor the company objective. Followers will typically prefer this type of leadership as well, becauseit provides direct one on one communication with their leader. This type of communication will help the leader develop the follower’s strengths and continue building upon their skills. This leadership style offers a level of flexibility that makes it an ideal choice for myself, those I lead, and the organization to which I am a part of. The fluidity of this style of leadership
makes it a frontrunner in leadership choice, not only for the leader, and the follower, but for the entire organization. To further enhance the situational approach would be to include adaptive leadership practices so that as a leader, you could adapt to the changing environments, people, and problems. Adaptive leadership is a style of leadership that leans on the practical approach of adapting, overcoming, and thriving in a challenging environment (Gleeson, 2016). Leaders must recognize the strengths and weaknesses of their followers. They must have the ability to see the big picture of things, and correctly identify what is needed in each situation in order to have
