"When in Rome, do as the Romans." Rome Italy is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the European Union. Visitors come from around the world to see world-famous landmarks such as the Colosseum, the Forum and the Patheon . Young couples love to throw three coins into Trevi Fountain , climb the Spanish Steps or enjoy a latte in Piazza Navona . Rome is a city of wonder, love, and most of all culture. Rome has tons of great culture and excitement that make the Eternal City a major tourist attraction. Rome is the capital of Italy and the country's largest and most populated city and commune , with over 2.7 million residents in 1,285.3 km 2 (496.3 sq mi). In 2006 the population of the metropolitan area was estimated by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development to have a population of 3.7 million.  In 2007 Rome was the 11th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union , and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy.
