Earth Science Midterm Chapter 1- The Philosophy of Interpretation: Catastrophism Vs. Gradualism Early attempt to define Earth’s age: - one of the first attempts to narrate a story about earths surface was done by Nicolaus Steno (1638- 1686). Did this by what he saw happening (weathering, layers). Task was to find out “in what way the present condition of anything discloses the past condition of the same thing” - in stenos theory the original surface was a smooth pile or sediments - Hutton- “father of modern geology” - steno “father of Stratigraphy (study of the layers of rock and sediments)” - Archbishop Ussher: calculated (from scriptural births/deaths) time of Creation at sunset of 22 October 4004BC. Philosophies: Catastrophism : (the history of the earth was a record of unique ecents, that there was no such thing as a natural evolution of anything—biological or inorganic) o Earth originated from molten ball.
