Gomes, PhD Muscle Physiology and Proteomics Laboratory http://www.npb.ucdavis.edu/labs/gomes/gomeslab2009.htm One Midterm Midterm: Multiple Choice 4 th Week Three written assignments Final Exam: Short answers and one long answer. Three Review Sessions one before the Midterm and the last two days of class. Course Outline Reduces depression. Prevents type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer. Heart and lungs work more efficiently giving you more energy when you need it. Promotes better sleep. The best Pill Available The best Pill Available The Pill is Regular Exercise Metabolism is the sum of the physical and chemical processes that occur in your cells, all of which work to produce energy. What energy systems are being used during a 100 meter sprint? What energy systems are being used during a marathon? What happens when we run a few miles and then sprints to the finish line? WHAT IS EXERCISE METABOLISM AND WHAT ARE WE EXPECTED TO LEARN? Metabolism gets blamed when people put on weight or have trouble losing weight, but everyone can learn how to speed up your metabolism. Increasing your metabolism can help you burn calories, replace fat with muscle and give you more energy. The key to increasing your metabolism is understanding what it is. WHY IS LEARNING ABOUT EXERCISE METABOLISM IMPORTANT? The Bodys Energy Metabolism anabolism (an-ABB-o-lism): reactions in which small molecules are put together to build larger ones. Anabolic reactions consume energy. ana = up catabolism (ca-TAB-o-lism): reactions in which large molecules are broken down to smaller ones. Catabolic reactions usually release energy. kata = down Energy metabolism centers on four basic units: From carbohydrates: glucose. From lipids: glycerol and fatty acids. From proteins: amino acids. Integration of Metabolism: Review of Roles of Systems in Muscle Contraction EXERCISE METABOLISM Exercise significantly increases the human bodys demand for energy than at rest. Most of this increase in energy is required to produce ATP for contracting skeletal muscles. Therefore it is important to study the energy expenditure during rest and exercise. ENERGY REQUIREMENTS AT REST During rest, the energy requirements of the human body is less and constant and is derived from aerobic metabolism. Since oxygen consumption is a measure of aerobic metabolism, the amount of oxygen consumed at rest indicates the baseline energy requirement at rest. At rest, the total energy requirement of an individual is relatively low. What is our Energy Requirements at Rest? Nearly all ATP produced by aerobic metabolism Resting O 2 consumption: 0.25 L/min 3.5 ml/kg/min Blood lactate levels are low (<1.0 mmol/L) ATP Adenosine triphosphate Form of energy cells use for metabolism Made in mitochondria of cell Cells store only a small amount, so ATP must be made constantly Made by metabolism of : Glucose Fat Protein Instant Energy...
