Part I: Synthesis of a Coordination Compound of Iron Fe(NH 4 )SO 4 • 6H 2 O K x Fe y (C 2 O 4 ) z • αH 2 O The purpose of this part of the experiment was to prepare a coordination compound of Iron in which water molecules and Oxalate ions (C 2 O 4 2- ) act as ligands. A few characteristics of Part I are: a. Weight of Iron (II) Ammonium Sulfate Hexahydrate used to start the experiment = 10.0 g b. Some color changes of the mixture noted in Part I, along with the substance added are as follows: Light blue Yellow [Addition of 1M Oxalic Acid (H 2 C 2 O 4 )] Yellow Orange [Addition of 1.8 M Potassium Oxalate (K 2 C 2 O 4 )] Orange Maroon [Addition of 6% Hydrogen Peroxide (H 2 O 2 )] Maroon Clear Green [Addition of 1M Oxalic Acid (H 2 C 2 O 4 )] c. The weight of the Coordination Compound (Green Crystals) obtained in this part = 10.1628 g Part II: Standardization of Potassium Permanganate Solution The purpose of this part of the experiment was to determine the concentration of the stock Potassium Permanganate (KMnO 4 ) solution by a process called standardization.
