Geology Exam #2 Hydrologic Cycle and River Systems-Chapter 2, 16, and 17 Know distribution of water Hydrologic Cycle- movement of water through earth’s reservoirs o Evaporation- heat from the sun takes water in liquid and changes it to gas o Precipitation- condensed water vapor goes back to earth o Runoff- excess water on land flowing downhill or precipitates over oceans o Groundwater- water that percolates or infiltrates far enough into the ground o Transpiration- precipitation and soil moisture that is taken up through plants Drainage Basin (watershed)- any water that falls within basins will be drained by rivers/streams in that basin Drainage Divides- area with higher elevation that separates drainage basins Five patterns of river drainage o Dendritic- rock resist to erosion and forms treelike patterns o Rectangular- o Trellis- rivers flow along valley’s in folded rocks o Radial- rivers flow from certain uplift o Distributary- Longitudinal Profile- plot of elevation of river/stream from source area to where it
