Problem Set 4 Physics 1116 : Due Friday, 09/24/2010 Please write the names of any classmates with whom you discussed the homework problems at the top of your problem set 1. A chain of mass m and length l is lying on a frictionless table. A segment of the chain, length y 0 , hangs oﬀ the edge of the table. You are holding the end of the chain which is on the table, and at t = 0, you release the chain with zero initial speed. What is the equation of motion, y ( t ), of the end of the chain? Don’t worry about the chain hitting the ﬂoor, or times after the entire chain slips oﬀ the table. 2. Two identical balls of mass m are attached via a pair of identical springs (spring constant k ) and looped around a frictionless cylinder of radius R . The top ball is then displaced along the cylinder by a distance d , while the bottom ball is held ﬁxed. At t = 0, both balls are released with zero initial speed. Ignore any eﬀects due to gravity.
