PLB 105 Lab Manual—Fall 2010 page 12-1 Laboratory 12 Shoot Apex and Stem Primary Growth In today's lab you will continue your study of stems by looking at sections of shoot apices  and primary growth in stems.   A. Longitudinal Views of Shoot Tips Median longitudinal sections (MLS) of stem apical regions are most frequently used to illustrate shoot apex organization. Because of different patterns of leaf arrangements and stages of developing leaves, such sections include fragmentary and oblique sections of leaves, which may be confusing. Keep in mind that these are two-dimensional views of three-dimensional structures. Examine the prepared slides. These are median longitudinal sections of shoot apices of several representative vascular plants. Note the tunica and corpus layers where possible. Observe the differentiated procambium and vascular tissues associated with leaf primordia. Sketch outlines of these apices and their apical organization. 1.
