Psych Final Review: -PARSCORE Thinking: -attention: change blindness: failure to detect changes in parts of a scene (lady doesn't notice when something blocks her view that she is no longer talking to the same person) attention blink: during a brief time after perceiving something, it is difficult to attend to something else -problem solving: algorithm: mechanical, repetitive procedure used to correctly answer guaranteed heuristic: shortcuts or strategies for simplifying a problem; could lead to errors representative: if an item resembles other items in a category, we assume it's also a member of that category base rate information: how often a particular type appears in population ex: engineering studying availability: strategy of assuming that how easily one can remember examples of some kind of item indicates how common the item itself is ex: if the news is talking about crime we think there is always crime -errors in problem solving: framing effects: the way question is posed influences way it is answered over confidence: believe estimates are more accurate than they actually are ex: how did you do on the exam? confirmation bias: paying attention to only what interests us
