Black Studies 1 Final Section A 1. Yuri Kochiyama became a cannon for black intellectualism by dedicating her life to the promotion of true social equality. Kochiyama exemplified her political imagination as a Japanese American civil rights intellectual and becoming involved in social movements and political coalitions with a similar goal for equality. Particularly, she fought against the matrix of domination alongside Malcolm X and the OAAU. Their joint effort to eliminate intersecting oppression of minorities demonstrates the feeling of transnational solidarity between aggrieved groups. 2. Difference between multiculturalism and anti-racism: In a multicultural society all humans are seen and treated as equals and a belief in “colorblindness” exists. While this notion does seem ideal, in reality it promotes a false appearance of equality. encourage all humans to assume true recognition of this undeniable injustice faced by minorities in America and actively begin to expose ideas for eradicating it. In his discussion of Racism 1.0 and 2.0, Tim Wise illustrates the difference between multiculturalism and anti-racism. His argument highlights that the legitimacy of racism in America is disguised by the dangerous surface-level equality that exists in a multicultural society. Section B 1. Robin Kelley argues that those committed to social justice must also “wake up and start dreaming” by exercising their ability to imagine new, creative solutions for improving the current situation of racism in America. Kelley believes that academics often fail to grapple with the idea of love and freedom, thereby restricting their ability to imagine and dream. Rather than fighting racism in the same manner as this “academy” of intellectuals, Kelley urges all people in society to actively dream of ideas for resisting oppression and then propose these ideas to the intellectuals. 2 2

Kelley believes that people cannot simply be contented by their situation of oppression; to make a better life for all a reality they must begin to imagine and visualize it. In contrast to the popular belief that racism can be eradicated simply by being aware of it, Kelley promotes social movements as the most effective method of creating true awareness and generating new theories about race and oppression. Social movements are the most influential, according to Kelley, because they force people to acknowledge the importance of the issue and inspire them to experience the situation in someone else’s shoes.
