Philosophy Midterm Review Russell Value of Science: goods it strives for are useful to numerable people who are ignorant of its effects. Value of Philosophy: indirect value, changes us by making better people and thus a better society Criticisms of Philosophy: useless trifling, concerned with issues that we cant know the answers to Answers to Criticisms: useless trifling> “practical men” say philosophy is trifling (men that are only concerned with with material goods) more to life then materials. .. what we will never know> produces knowledge but not laundry list knowledge, gives unity and system to body of sciences and lets us be consistent, gives knowledge by examining grounds of examination, convictions, prejudices, and beliefs Philosophy has different results than science: when a question in philosophy gets answered it becomes science, science started as philosophy, what is fundamental in human nature. Some questions are insoluble. Philosophy holds value: uncertainty of not knowing, free of prejudices derived from common sense,
