August 10, 2010 Topic: Mindfulness o Non-distraction o Non-conceptualization Mindfulness as non-distraction: o Opposing construct: mind wandering o A fluctuation of attention away from the task at hand at either: o Task-unrelated stimuli from external environment o Labels as heuristics: o Clearly adaptive, but clearly not the whole story o Consider the possibility that you are relating to nearly everything in your life this way o Surface Relationships: o Latch on to most salient descriptors o Assign a series of stereotypes/labels o Start relating to those concepts rather than the person themselves Mindfulness as non-conceptuality: o Inner dialogue as commentator o This is how we think we know the world o Appears to be primary source of understanding and insight But direct experience leads to direct realization o Meta-Awareness: o The explicit appraisal of the contents of consciousness When we catch ourselves mind-wandering o Grounded in concepts and labels o Useful in development of mindfulness
