Business Ethics Theories of Moral Development o Stage 1 – Punishment –Obedience Orientation Don’t do something because afraid of punishment o Stage 2 – Instrumental Relativist Orientation Understand multiple points of view, but still thinking about self o Stage 3 – Good Boy – Good Girl Orientation Consider not only our own best interest, but also want to be perceived as a good person in society o Stage 4 – Law and Order Orientation On top of wanting a good reputation, it is important to obey rules in society to maintain social order, avoid chaos o Stage 5 – Social Contract Orientation What kind of society do we want? What are our values? o Stage 6 – Universal Ethical Principle Orientation We need to look at universal morality principles. Ghandi, MLK< etc. The purpose of a corp. (Dodge V. Ford) o Corporations are legally mandated to pay some dividends, showing that even in some moral situations, the bottom line is KING Corporate Constituency Statutes (passed in 36 states)
