WWII - the Cold War I. US enters the war 1. Geroge Kennan is writing to gov officials in Washington. Called the “long telegram” later published under “x” 2. Soviets saw the world as divide between socialist and capitalist camps – no coexistance. Only way to stop soviet union was to meet power with power. Build up cohesion and resistance of berlin wall 3. Counter soviet expansion where ever needed 4. Contain communism where it is in this moment, do not let it expand. 5. Same year, 1946- “Iron Curtain” falling across Europe- churchill. a. President Truman had Kennan’s argument/warnings looked into. Concluded that he was right. Soviet union was expansionist and would expand wherever they could if they weren’t stopped. b. 1947- Britain had been providing security in med. Region, US had to decide were they going to let power vacuum develop or replace british power (because they are pulling out). Doing something would be a major break in traditional us ir c. Truman wasn’t sure that the American gov. would go along with
