Marquez 1 Alexia Marquez Dr. Stuart Smith Intro to Archaeology 3 4 December 2019 Old world civilizations: Mesopotamian vs Mayan In early history, the elite civilizations of Mesopotamia and Maya formed strong empires under political authority. As one of the first elite civilizations Mesopotamia and Maya shared many of the same values on how their states were run even when they were on opposite sides of the world. Not only do these civilizations contribute to our society’s history but also to the study of archeology. Archaeology has “shifted away from systems-ecological approaches toward a greater concern with individuals and groups” as a way to better understand how these civilizations operated.(Fagan 2017) Archeologists study the way each civilization operated by the powers of coercive, economic and ideological to understand the ruler’s power toward its state. The ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Maya had different ideas when it came to having a powerful empire , however, both of them had the desire to excel in coercive, economic and ideology/social powers. Mesopotamian and Mayan civilizations used coercive, economic and ideological powers to develop political authority. Coercive power is the application of force to compel behavior usually by threatening the citizens with a punishment.(Smith 2019a) Many civilizations use coercive power to maintain discipline and enforce organization policies to ensure order within the state. Economic power depends on the ability to organize more specialized production and the diverse tasks of food storage and food distribution.(Fagan 2017) Some Rulers grow through civilization
