Balanced Reactions: None Results and Discussions: This was a multistep lab to test the effectiveness of common laboratory techniques such as extractions and washing. Part A was to test the extraction of pentadecane from 25ml of water and then a trail with 25ml of water and 20 ml of tert-butyl methyl ether to test the effectiveness of the extraction in both trails. In trail 2, the solution was not dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. Part B tested the extraction of a colored polar organic solid (crystal violet) from water with methylene chloride. Part C tested the effectiveness of washing a fluorene mixture contaminated with crystal violet (purple solution) in Trail 1 and then with fluorenone (yellow solution) in Trail 2. Part A: Trail 1: Percent Yield: Mass of sample: 5.0g Mass of crystals obtained: 4.51g Refractive Index: 1.4125 (Literature 1.431C i ) Trail 2: Percent Yield: Mass of sample: 5.0g Mass of crystals obtained: 4.42g
