Balanced Reactions: None Results and Discussions: The experiment was done to compare the effectiveness of various distillation methods when distilling out methyl acetate from n-butyl acetate, ethyl acetate, or n-propyl acetate. The different methods included a simple distillation, fractional distillation with glass beads, choreboy, vigoreaux, and finally carborandum chips, which I was assigned to do. A 25 mL sample of 1:1 methyl acetate: n-butyl acetate was obtained and then distilled. 3ml portions of the distillate were separately collected, while measuring the boiling point during each distillation. The refractive index of each sample was then measured. Data: Refractive Indexes vs. Method of Distillation (all methyl acetate: n-butyl acetate) Fractional Distillation (Carborandum Chips)(my data) Fractional Distillation (Vigoreaux) i Fractional Distillation (Choreboy) ii Fractional Distillation (Glass Beads) iii Simple Distillation iv Sample
