Balanced Reactions: Chalcones are prepared via an aldol condensation between an aromatic aldehyde and an aliphatic/aromatic ketone, base catalyzed. i Mechanism: Results and Discussions: Chalcones are alpha, beta unsaturated ketones possessing aromatic R groups. Reaction was performed without solvent, and 5mmol of benzaldehyde and 5mmol of acetophenone were ground directly with solid sodium hydroxide to produce the product chalcone. This demonstrated that there was a lot of impurity. Final melting point of 103-106.8 indicates that the product was most likely #19, which means the benzaldehyde had a only -H groups, and then acetophenone had an -OCH3 group on its aromatic ring. ii The crude melting point of 85-99 was not too far from the crude melting point 73-78 predicted by the chart.
