The laws that have been set forth provide for a common set of rules that not only protect its citizens, but also protect their individual rights. In the 1950s, the FDA urged Congress to pass a law for new drug administration to protect a persons right to receive medications for diabetes. New drugs, known as cyclamates, had been tested for several years and Abbott Drug Co. in particular was eager to put its new cyclamate product in the market. Prior to 1950, FDA officials simply reviewed test data for any drug that companies presented to determine whether or not the drug was safe. Upon approval, they allowed the drug to circulate in the market.
