Lecture 3 Notes Ethical Issues in International Business Employment practices, human rights, environment regulations, corruption, the moral obligation of multinational companies. Social Responsibility Moral philosophers argue it to come with power. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Idea that businesspeople should consider the social consequences of economic actions when making business decisions. Should try to balance people, profit, & the planet. Ethical Dilemmas Situations in which none of the available alternatives seems ethically acceptable. Exists because real world decisions are complex, difficult to frame, and involve various consequences that are difficult to quantify. Triple ‘A’ Ethical Model Awareness, Analysis, Action Roots of Unethical Behavior Personal ethics, Organizational culture, Unrealistic performance expectations, Leadership, Decision-making processes Straw Man Sets up arguments that will fail, take somewhat extreme positions, adopted by some MNEs, but do not work for most Friedman Doctrine The only responsibility of a company is to increase profits lawfully
