Phylum Echinodermata Echino = spiny, derm = skin. About 6000 species lives exclusively in ocean beds. Ex – sea stars, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers, and crinoids. Ossicles – internal layer of calcareous plates that has spines protruding through a thin layer of skin. Body symmetry – radial in adult but bilateral in larvae. They have unique water vascular system (WVS): locomotion, food and waste transportation, circulation and respiration. WVS – it is a series of coelomic water filled canals with hollow projections called tube feet.
