The Union Drive at Apollo Corporation 2 The Union Drive at Apollo Corporation Apollo Corporation is a general component parts producer for the communication industry in which is known for intense competitive pressure. Apollo Corporation has been the type of company to not enforce and has been very lax on their HR policies and procedures with their employees. Jean Lipski, HR director, with the plan to rectify and meet these competitive challenges, held a series of meeting with managers and instructed them to implement HR policies strictly, and start giving disciplinary action against employees who were not in compliance with company policy. Bob Thomas worked for Apollo Corporation for nineteen years as a plant maintenance engineer. Bob Thomas was a below average worker with less than acceptable attendance. He was also known as somewhat of a complainer and troublemaker. Apollo Corporation management negligence in its dealings with employees regarding the attendance policy and poor work performances generated the HR director to get a new approach in organizing meetings with managers to implement strict HR policies and intensify their supervisory relationship with employees. Bob Thomas after hearing this information decided to contact a union organizer of the Brotherhood of Machine Engineers and requested a union drive at Apollo. Within a week, flyers were given out to the employees announcing a union meeting. A couple weeks later Bob Thomas was discharged from the Apollo Corporation, supposedly for his poor work ethic. Jean Lipski, HR director, heard that Bob Thomas was the one who was leading and organizing these campaigns and she decided to terminate his employment. She based her discussion on his work performance and unsatisfactory attendance. Bob Thomas and the union
